Why I Created Gror: The Search For Like-Minded

Hi, I am the solo founder and creator behind Gror. If you are reading this, you might be wondering who is building this platform and why. The truth is, I didn't start Gror because I wanted to build a tech startup; I built it to solve a problem I was experiencing myself.

The reality of "proximity" friendships

Throughout life—from primary school to high school, on to university, and into the workforce—I have experienced the same pattern: with every transition, friendships slowly faded away. I realized that many of my connections weren't built on shared interests, values, or common goals, but simply on "proximity"—the fact that we happened to be in the same environment every day.

I don't actually have a hard time making friends in the environments I'm in. But I was missing the like-minded friendships. The ones that give you the security of knowing they won't just die out the next time you change your "proximity." But when I started looking for these like-minded people, I hit a wall:

  • Traditional attempts felt random: I tried evening classes, Meetups, book clubs, and joining a football team now and then. But it felt incredibly random, incredibly time-consuming, and very out of my comfort zone.
  • The fear of exposure: It is a bit of a sore spot to admit that you are looking for new friends. Having to "advertise it" publicly with a face and name on digital platforms felt uncomfortable.
  • Superficial platforms: Getting slightly desperate, I created profiles on friend-finding apps anyway. But I encountered tons of dead profiles and platforms that only showed a picture and a short text. There was no way to say: "Show me the people I actually have the most in common with."

Building a better alternative

I realized we needed a system that connects people based on a combination of their interests, values, goals, and chapter in life—or their "vector-sum" match. That is why I spent nine months coding Gror. I wanted to create a small Danish alternative that removes the superficiality using initial anonymity and a detailed, tag-based matching system.

Gror allows you to combine tags so you can filter for exactly what you are looking for, whether that is a specific hobby, a shared core value, or a chapter in life.

You are not the only one searching

When I launched Gror, I had no idea if anyone else felt the same way. Today, there are over 700 users on the platform (as of 2026-06-29). Seeing hundreds of people using something I coded to find like-minded connections I find deeply meaningful.

The ultimate goal of Gror is simple: I hope the platform can make it easier to create connections that last a lifetime. I want to find like-minded people, meet them in real life, and then delete the app (but still let others use the solution I built). I believe that talking to someone who actually gets you is far more stimulating than looking down at a phone. I think many miss these stimulating conversations.

Let's grow (or "Gror" in Scandinavian).
